Energy Scams in Australia — Fake Price Comparison and Discount Offer Frauds

📅 January 4, 2026 ⏱ 4 min read

Energy scams have become increasingly sophisticated in Australia as electricity and gas costs have remained a significant concern for households and businesses. Scammers exploit the genuine desire for better energy deals through both digital and traditional channels, and the complexity of the Australian energy market makes it easier for fraudulent offers to seem credible. Victoria's deregulated energy market, with its hundreds of plans from dozens of retailers, provides fertile ground for confusion and exploitation.

The Fake Energy Comparison Site

Search engine ads and social media posts direct victims to fake energy comparison websites that offer dramatically below-market rates. When you sign up, the outcome depends on the specific scam: in some cases, you provide bank details for direct debit that are used fraudulently. In others, you are enrolled in a real but expensive energy plan through a legitimate retailer that pays the scam operator a significant commission for the lead — essentially, you are signed up for a worse deal under the guise of a better one. The Victorian Essential Services Commission has received complaints about this practice.

The Door-to-Door Energy Scam

Door-to-door energy representatives are a persistent feature of Victorian life, and while some are legitimate, others are operating fraudulent or misleading practices. Common tactics include: claiming to represent your current energy retailer when they represent a competitor; misrepresenting the terms of the plan being offered; using urgency ("this offer is today only") to prevent you from reading the terms; and asking to see your current energy bill — which contains your account details and consumption data — and using this to switch your account without your genuine informed consent.

The Unauthorised Switching Scam

Unauthorised or "slamming" is when your energy account is switched to a different retailer without your genuine informed consent. In some cases this involves forged signatures or misrepresentation. Victims often discover the switch only when they receive a bill from an unfamiliar retailer months later. If you believe you have been switched without consent, you have the right to contest the switch — contact the Energy and Water Ombudsman Victoria.

Protecting Yourself and Your Business

Compare energy plans through the government's official comparison service at energymadeeasy.gov.au — it is free, independent, and covers all Victorian energy retailers. Do not give your energy bill to door-to-door representatives — this provides your account details and enables unauthorised switching. Do not sign anything without reading it carefully and taking time to consider. Any energy offer that requires you to decide today, before the representative leaves, should be treated with significant suspicion. For businesses receiving energy offers by phone, verify by calling the retailer directly on their official number before agreeing to anything.

Business Energy Fraud

Melbourne businesses face additional energy-related fraud risks beyond household scams. Fake energy brokers approach business owners offering to negotiate lower energy contracts in exchange for a commission or upfront fee — they may obtain your current contract details and then submit switching applications without delivering the promised savings, or simply disappear with the fee. Legitimate energy brokers are remunerated by the retailer, not the customer. Any broker requesting an upfront fee from your business should be regarded with caution.

Your Rights When You Have Been Scammed

If you have been switched to a worse energy plan without your genuine informed consent, you have rights. Contact the Energy and Water Ombudsman Victoria (EWOV) at ewov.com.au or on 1800 500 509 — they provide free, independent dispute resolution for energy and water customers. Document your original contract terms and the circumstances of the switch. EWOV can require retailers to restore your previous tariff and compensate you for any excess charges. For suspected fraud by a door-to-door representative, also report to Consumer Affairs Victoria. IntrusionX focuses on cybersecurity rather than energy fraud, but as part of broader business security awareness we help Melbourne businesses identify and avoid all forms of commercial fraud — contact us for a consultation.
